This Mixed-Media painting on Canvas, created in 2021, is part of Missy’s Soul Portraits, Series I collection and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. The portrait depicts Angie, as she looked on her wedding day at just 14 years old. This life took place in England during the 1500’s.

Upon arrival to her new bedroom chamber after the wedding dinner, the young bride’s new maid reached out to remove her cloak but during a few brief moments of silent protest, she hung onto it tightly. Missy did not initially intend to capture any image from the wedding night for obvious reasons but this one particular moment was too powerful to ignore.

At that time, girls and women didn’t have a voice in their own futures or even about their own bodies. A girl first belonged to her father and then to the husband her father would choose for her. Alarmingly, this situation continues to play out even today in certain parts of the world (including the United States where it takes place under the radar within various religious groups).
